Mason Marvin Obituary

Mason Daniel Marvin Jr.
May 2, 1928 to October 20, 2016
Mason Marvin passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his spouse of 63 years, Sarajane, and all six of his children. Mason was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey and was the only son of Lola Parker Marvin and Mason D. Marvin Sr. He had three sisters Lola, Dorothy and Ruth. Family was very important to Mason and he was so proud of all his children, 10 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and many special nieces and nephews.
Mason served during the World War II era in the United States Army and attended the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia on the GI Bill, obtaining a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was in the Sigma Chi fraternity. 1953 was a big year for Mason when he graduated from college, married his sweetheart Sarajane, and they conceived the first of their six children. He went to work for the General Electric Company first stationed in Lynn, Massachusetts and transferring to the GE Evendale plant where he worked in the Jet Propulsion Division and retired from GE after 32 years of service. He moved the family to Greenhills in 1964 where all six of his children graduated from Greenhills High School.
Music was a big part of Mason's life, and he loved singing Barbershop as a tenor in the Delta Kings chorus. An avid woodworker, many Delta Kings wives received a unique handmade wooden box at the holidays as a thank you gift. Mason and Jane organized the barbershop quartet Singing Telegrams for many years together which raised money for the Delta Kings group. They travelled on numerous occasions throughout the United States and Europe with the barbershoppers. Mason also played the trumpet and sang in the choir at his church for over 40 years at Northminster Presbyterian Church.
Watching sports was a favorite pastime and he rooted for the Cincinnati Reds going back to the Crosley Field days, and the Cincinnati Bengals during good seasons and bad ones. Cincinnati will be losing one of their long time #1 fans! Mason had a great sense of humor, loved family gatherings, and his sharp wit and wisdom will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Mason was preceded in death by his mother Lola, his father Mason, and his sister Lola. He is survived by his spouse Jane Marvin (Patterson), daughters Susan Marvin, Heidi Martin (Brice), Nadine Burke (Ron), Wendy Kirkwood, and sons John Marvin (Rachelle) and Tim Marvin (Michaela), sisters Dorothy Nagel and Ruth Wilkins, ten grandchildren Kristen Mitchell, Kyle McCarthy, Carrie Johnson, Luke McCarthy, Brittany Marvin, Catherine Green, Michelle Marvin, Emily Freihofer, Corinne Kirkwood, Jasmin Marvin, two great grandchildren Charlotte Green and Jackson Mitchell, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will take place at the Northminster Presbyterian Church on Compton Road on Tuesday, October 25, 2016 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Mason's name to Hospice of Cincinnati.
