John W. Van Benschoten, affectionately known as Jack, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on January 10, 1931, Jack left an indelible mark on everyone he met throughout his long and fulfilling life.
Jack dedicated over 30 years of his career to the post office, where he became a respected figure within his community. His commitment to service went beyond his professional life; he proudly served in the Army for 21 years, exemplifying a spirit of duty and honor that characterized his entire life.
An enthusiast of trains, Jack found joy in the intricacies of railways and the stories they carried. His passion for the outdoors and nurturing future generations was evident in his work with the Boy Scouts, where he influenced many young lives, instilling values of courage, kindness, and adventure.
Jack's family was the cornerstone of his life. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Joann VanBenschoten (née Monahan), who was a steadfast companion throughout their 33 years together. He is also survived by his cherished children: Linda VanBenschoten, Phil (Sandy) VanBenschoten, James (Cheryl) VanBenschoten, Nick (Lynne) VanBenschoten, Kim (Chip) Branscum, and Sharon (Doug) Deller. Jack took great pride in his role as a grandfather to Melissa (Brian), Heidi (David), Eric (Presley), Elizabeth (Richard), Eva (Steve), Madeline, Courtlynn, Nicholas Jr. (Jessica), Adrienne, Emily, Katie, Michael (Ann), Ashley (Jesse), Amy, and Aaron, as well as his 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis VanBenschoten, who held a special place in his heart throughout their years together. He is also reunited in spirit with his son Max (Karen) VanBenschoten and his brother Ben (Lillian) VanBenschoten, along with his sister-in-law Barbara (Terry) Monahan.
Jack's visitation will be Monday, January 12th from 9 AM until 9:45 AM at St. Dominic Church (Gathering Space) 4551 Delhi Rd. Funeral Mass to follow at 10 AM. Burial will follow at St. Joe New Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Ohio Living Foundation, Life Care Fund, 9200 Worthington Rd., Suite 300, Westerville, Ohio 43082, Comboni Missionaries, 1318 Nagel Rd., Cincinnati, Ohio 45255 or the charity of your choice.
Jack W. Van Benschoten’s legacy of love, dedication, and service to his family and community will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His spirit will continue to inspire those he leaves behind, guiding them as they navigate life’s journey.
