John H. Wellen III
Beloved husband of Chelsea Wellen (nee VandeMerwe), Johnny passed away unexpectedly at home, with his wife by his side, on Friday, June 7, 2024 at age 45. He distributed nicknames freely and had gathered quite a few himself over the decades. The 3 that remained in frequent rotation include: THE Cookie Monster (no cookie was safe except oatmeal raisin, because “raisins do not belong in cookies”), Johnye (for questionable early 2000 music choices), Johnny Smash (frequently used at the racetrack and signature on credit card receipts). He was a gentle giant with the biggest hugs. He was also a world-famous pillow fighter and wrestler in his own home where he frequently dominated 2 household dependents simultaneously. He was awarded #1 Dad trophies 7 years running. His first passion and priority was undoubtedly family, and his second was drag racing. He loved drag racing. And no, for everyone wondering, his car is not done.
Known for his congeniality, humor and loyalty he was held in high regard by many, which is evident on last month’s phone bill reflecting 1,224 minutes of talk time and 2,963 texts. He cultivated many long-lasting friendships that brought joy, laughter and comfort to daily life.
He was a dedicated and loving father to Silas John (7) and Everett Jan (6). He was the favorite youngest child of John H. Wellen Jr. and the late Dixie L. Wellen, and favorite local son-in-law to Jan and Martha VandeMerwe. He will be deeply missed by his brother Justin (Nicole) Wellen, sister Jenny (Steve) Lipez, sisters-in-law Jill (Jon) Peterson, Teneill (Corban) Russell, Brook (Jason) Raymond, Haley (David) Christopherson and Sierra (Walnan) Constantino, and numerous aunts and uncles. He was a kind and playful uncle to Odin, Louie, Laila (goddaughter), Charles, Abby, Parker, Mia, Pepper, Lincoln, Lucia, Owen, Lacey, Marcus, Hannah, Felicity, Miriam and Lua.
Visitation will be at the Vitt, Stermer & Anderson Funeral Home, 4619 Delhi Rd. Thursday, June 20th from 5-8PM.
Those wishing to honor his memory may donate to the boy’s education fund by contributing via Zelle or Venmo using JWellenMemorial@outlook.com or contacting Jill Peterson ( 623-330-2125 ).
