Joseph G. Scherer Jr., a lifelong resident of Delhi Township and devoted member of St. Dominic Church, passed away on May 30, 2026. Born on November 17, 1942, Joe lived a full and dedicated life marked by profound faith, deep love for his family and friends and community involvement.
A man known for his amazing sense of humor and boundless generosity, Joe would readily give anything for anybody. His faith was central to his life, reflected in his active participation in the Men's Society at St. Dominic Church and his longstanding commitment as an usher and many other parish roles. He was also a familiar and beloved figure within various community circles, including the Delhi Township Zoning Appeals Board and St. Dominic Old Timers softball team, where his spirited participation endeared him to many.
Joe's passion for sports was evident from his youth. He proudly played baseball on Elder’s back-to-back state championship teams in 1959 and 1960 and continued his athletic pursuit at Xavier University. His enthusiasm extended into his adult years as a devoted season ticket holder for Elder Football and Xavier Basketball, an avid golfer, and a dedicated supporter of the Cincinnati Reds. His commitment to sports was equally reflected in his unwavering support for all his grandchildren’s sporting events.
In addition to his athletic interests, Joe was a prolific gardener and took great pride in his yardwork, a skill he learned working at the family greenhouse for many years, this was a testament to his patient and nurturing character. His social life was rich and fulfilling, characterized by lifelong friendships dating back to his childhood, a cherished card club, and a close-knit group known fondly as “The Crowd,” with whom he shared many joyful moments.
Joe’s professional career was marked by dedication and entrepreneurial spirit. He brought his talents to Standard Register for many years before establishing his own company, where he successfully sold business products for years. Alongside his work life, Joe generously volunteered for Meals-on-Wheels, embodying his deep commitment to serving others.
Above all, Joe’s greatest love was his wife of 60 years, Lois Scherer, to whom he was deeply devoted. Their partnership was the cornerstone of his life. He is also survived by his children Kim (Brian) Seltzer, Kathi (Joe) Wanger, and Jenny (Dave) Striebich; grandchildren Matthew (Jessica Salerno) Seltzer, and Nate Seltzer, Erin (PJ) Laake, Andrew Wanger, Kelli Wanger, Luke (Mary Grace) Striebich, Maria (Nick Shaw) Striebich and Emma (Ethan Keeling) Striebich; and great-grandchildren Maya and Valerie Laake. Joe is further survived by his siblings Ginny Scherer, S.C. and Lois (late Jim) Carpenter and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Joseph and Evelyn Scherer.
