Peter “Pete” Sciamanna, age 95, of Cincinnati, Ohio, died peacefully surrounded by family on January 11. Cherished uncle and dedicated son, he was born in Cincinnati in 1930 to the late Cesira (De Carolis) and Giuseppe Sciamanna. He is preceded in death by all six of his siblings including Enzo, Emil “Ski” (Mary), Marcella (Larry) Brehm, Anna (Matthew) Garmon, Anthony, and Mary Jo (Jerry) Enzweiler. He was also preceded in death by nephews David Garmon and Scott Enzweiler, and niece Kathy Sciamanna. Pete is survived by nieces and nephews including Debbie Garmon; Andrew Brehm and Joanne Wines; Gayle Clinker and Marty Sciamanna; Cindy Collins, Becky Altenau and Michael Enzweiler. He also leaves behind multiple great nieces and nephews.

Pete graduated from Roger Bacon High School in 1949 where he was honored in his yearbook commemoration as “The Pride and Joy of Avondale.” He enlisted in the US Army in January, 1951 and fought in the Korean War where he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, a UN Service Medal (Korea), a National Defense Service Medal, and the Purple Heart. After his honorable discharge as Sergeant First Class, Pete worked in finance at General Electric and then at Cincinnati’s General Hospital. He attended the University of Cincinnati’s evening college and obtained a B.S. in Psychology, with a minor in Accounting. He then worked as a Probation Officer for Hamilton County and retired after 27 years. As part of his interest in criminology, Pete was also an instructor of Criminal Justice at UC Clermont College.

During those years while working full-time, Pete attended night school at Xavier University and would continue to demonstrate his passion for education by earning additional degrees: an MBA in Accounting, a Masters of Education, and a Master of Arts in English Literature. Subsequently, he obtained a Doctorate of Education from UC. He also earned a degree in Public Accountancy and ultimately became a CPA. Upon retirement, Pete continued to prepare tax returns for many clients until he retired his Ohio license in 2015.

Pete’s interest in politics extended to election campaigning for officials in Hamilton County and the State of Ohio’s Republican Party. He served as Precinct Captain and also Treasurer for many campaigns over the years. He was a member of the Sons of Italy and volunteered for decades at the Sacred Heart Church’s Italian dinner benefit. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. Pete was a devout Catholic, a life-long parishioner of St. William’s Church in Price Hill, and also enjoyed mass at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Riverside and St. Francis Xavier Church in downtown Cincinnati.

Pete was an avid reader and also lived a very physically active life. He was a member of the Cincinnati Athletic Club for decades where he worked out and swam. He ran in Cincinnati mini-marathons and golfed regularly, as recently as last summer.

Pete was highly respected by everyone he met. He was genuine, lived by example, exuded decency and integrity. He will be remembered and missed by so many but particularly by his nieces and nephews who he mentored throughout his life; by those in the Hamilton County Criminal Justice system from lawyers and judges to bailiffs, police officers and fellow probation officers; by golfing foursomes at so many clubs; by his kind neighbors; and, especially, by his good friend Patricia Clancy.
