Renate Rosemarie Bachler (nee Hanicke)
Born 7/8/38 in Berlin, Germany
Renate was the youngest of four siblings, they endured great hardship as World War II ended in 1945. Renate had a great passion and love of dance.
As Renate grew up, she started studying Cosmetology in Berlin she would carry a love for Cosmetology through her long life and even up until the last months of living with dementia. Even then still she would want to brush hair. She even loved brushing the hair of many of the staff members and they loved it also. Renate and Bob decided to marry even with somewhat of a language barrier. While Bob finished his service, Renate traveled to Cincinnati to stay with her sister Ruth who had also married an American Soldier Joe Yount. Once they were united, they married August 27, 1960. They settled in Price Hill in a four-family home where they met two couples Nick & Wilma and Bill & Jane that became lifelong friends. Our father eventually became a postman which was his lifelong job. Their first daughter Michelle was born in 1961. They then purchased a house across the street. Renate worked as a beautician in the Carew Tower in downtown Cincinnati. She loved the downtown atmosphere which reminded her of Berlin. She then eventually opened her own salon on Cleves Warsaw. Then their son Christopher was born in 1966. On February 17th,1969 Renate had become a United States Citizen. One of her first friends she met in their first apartment that ended up becoming a lifelong friend had helped her study, study to help her pass the test, it was a difficult test, but by this time her English was pretty good. One thing for sure everyone loved her German accent. Many wonderful memories were made during those years. Our parents had card parties, we'd have picnics at Mt. Echo Park, they would go dancing just about every weekend with many of their friends at Germania, and The Donauschwaben. Renate had instilled her German heritage in our family. She was an amazing cook and loved doing it. She made many German meals. Sauerkraut, Rouladen, German potato salad, Sauerbraten and many more. Many of our vacations were to where my dad was originally from which was North Dakota. So many wonderful memories we all made. Renate would travel back to Berlin every so many years to visit her parents and two brothers Wolfgang and Hans & nieces & nephews moved in 1971 to Bridgetown, and then little Jenny came along in 1971. Renate continued doing hair throughout all these years in our basement. As time passed there were weddings and grandchildren and more wonderful memories.
Our parents were blessed with 5 grandchildren, four girls and one boy. Unfortunately, our dad had passed March 3rd, 1998 from pancreatic cancer and was not here to meet his first grandson. There were some very dark days for all of us, especially for our mom. Fast forward to 2017 mom was diagnosed with beginning stages of dementia. Luckily there was a new facility that had recently opened The Glen, and moved her in August of 2017. In 2019 her youngest daughter, our sister passed in 2019. Rough times once again, but the light started shining through again eventually. Grandchildren married, great grandbabies born and another one on the way. Mom during the 8 -1/2 years her dementia continued to progress, it was so difficult getting the phone calls every week for a period of time of her falling down consistently. She was very fortunate to have wonderful care. Eventually she had to move to a memory care unit, she always had a big smile on her face when she had visitors. She was so loved by the caregivers and her family, especially by her dear sister Ruth {Aunt Pippi} whom also moved into The Glen in their Independent living unit. It was a blessing for them to have each other. Eventually she was moved once again to a more advanced memory care unit. I know our mama was a happy and content person up until her dying day. Auf Wiedersehen, Tschuss, Mach's Gut, Bis Bald, und Ich Liebe Dich Mama
