Robert J. Oswald

Robert J. Oswald, affectionately known as Bob, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2026, just after celebrating his 102nd birthday. Born on July 15, 1924, in Hamilton, Ontario, Robert lived a life marked by dedication—to his family, his profession, and his passions.

Robert’s family was at the core of his existence, and he regarded them as his greatest accomplishment. He is survived by his beloved wife, Jocelyn Hymel Oswald, whose companionship brought him immense joy for over 72 years. He will be dearly missed by his son, Scott M. Oswald, and his daughter, Sandy Coplen, as well as by Sandy’s husband, Dale Coplen. Robert's legacy continues through his grandchildren—Robby (Stephanie Miller) Oswald, Christine Oswald, and Caroline (Henley) Joseph—and his cherished great-grandchildren, Ronan Bourg and Ginny Bourg. The memory of Robert’s nurturing presence will always be held close by his family.

He was predeceased by his father, Robert Oswald, his mother, Maude Oswald, his granddaughter Katie (Jamison) Bourg, his brother Orland Oswald, and his sister Ruthie Noel. Their memories remained an important part of Robert’s heart throughout his long life.

Education was a foundation for Robert’s many achievements. He graduated from the University of Buffalo with a Bachelor’s Degree and went on to earn his Physical Therapy Degree from Stanford University. These academic milestones laid the groundwork for a distinguished career in healthcare.

Serving his country with pride, Robert joined the United States Navy during World War II, an experience that was both formative and distinguished in his early adulthood. Following his military service, Robert dedicated over four decades of his professional life as a Physical Therapist at Tulane University. His commitment to his work made a profound impact on countless patients and colleagues.

Outside of his career, Robert found deep fulfillment in a number of interests and pastimes. He was an avid stamp collector, taking joy in the detailed history and global community the hobby offered. Together with his wife, he traveled extensively throughout Europe, experiences that enriched their bond and brought them wonderful memories.

Robert’s devotion to fostering community extended to his involvement in athletics, where he served as a wrestling referee for high schools and colleges across Louisiana. In this role, he was known for his fairness, encouragement, and dedication to young athletes.

To those who knew him, Robert will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to those he loved and his gentle wisdom. His life stands as a testament to the values of service, learning, and genuine connection.

Robert J. Oswald’s spirit will continue to live on in the hearts and lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
