Waldon C. "Walt" Schaffer, born on April 26, 1931, peacefully passed away on July 17, 2026, at the age of 95. Walt's life was defined by service, kindness, and a steadfast dedication to both his loved ones and his community.
A lifelong resident of Cincinnati, Walt devoted much of his career to protecting and helping others as a proud firefighter for the City of Cincinnati. His sense of duty extended beyond his professional life—he also served his country with honor in the United States Navy. Whether battling fires or supporting fellow servicemen, Walt embodied courage and selflessness.
Walt's character was evident in every aspect of his life. He loved helping people and was known for his kindness and being a positive and uplifting person, carrying those qualities into all his interactions. A committed member and elder of his church, Walt found joy in service and cherished the strong bonds of his faith community.
He had a remarkable curiosity for the world, reflected in his enjoyment of travel and his penchant for collecting things that told stories of different places and times. Through these interests, Walt developed a wide perspective and a deep appreciation for life's journey.
Family was central to Walt's existence. He is survived by his loving children, sons Mark Schaffer and Randy (Phyllis) Schaffer, and daughter Holly (Ron) Alvarado. His legacy continues through his grandchildren—Mark (Alana), Randy, Christina, Michael (Tiffany), Nicholas, Lauren (Johann), and Kaylynn—and great-grandchildren—Aleah (Soufiane), Mark, Ian, Andrew and great great grandfather of Jade, Layla, Rosie, and Iris, all of whom carry forward his values and gentle spirit.
He is preceded in death by Joyce Schaffer, his beloved wife, whose memory he cherished; his son, Pete Schaffer; and his brother, Robert Schaffer.
Walt's warmth, generosity, and unyielding desire to help others left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His life speaks to the quiet strength and deep grace that come from living with purpose and compassion.
Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Walt are invited to honor his memory. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 23, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Vitt, Stermer & Anderson Funeral Home Delhi, 4619 Delhi Pike, Cincinnati, OH 45238.
